This article begins with a quote from Wikipedia: "A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish." But, are they legendary? Do mermaids really exist?
Many cultures offer their own mermaids folklore. These mythical creatures still captivate the hearts and minds of many. It is reported that the first tales of mermaids started in ancient Assyria. Supposedly the goddess (and let me stress that I believe in one God, I do not accept goddesses) Atargatis, changed herself into a mermaid out of shame and despair for accidentally causing the demise of her human lover.
Many years ago, some believed that within our majestic and sometimes tumultuous oceans, mermaids and sea monsters resided. Such legends have caused many a tidal wave. These mythical creatures, known as mermaids and merfolk, have captured human imaginations for eons of time.
